This book surprised me. I put off reading it because it just didn’t sound interesting to me. It is actually really good though! Moose is a 7th grader whose family moves to Alcatraz Island because his father gets a job there. He has to leave his home, friends, and school so he’s not exactly happy about it. Plus his sister has autism which adds complications to the situation. The warden’s daughter rubs him the wrong way right off the bat. She’s one of those kids that grown ups think is perfect, but the kids know better. She always has some scheme going that could get everyone in trouble. Will Moose be able to make some friends, stay out of trouble with the warden, and manage his sister? You’ll have to read to find out.
Serenity, New Mexico is the perfect place to live. No poverty, no crime, no lying, no arguments. In short, nothing bad ever happens. But maybe it’s just a little too perfect. What’s really going on in Serenity? A group of kids suspect something is not right in their idyllic life and set out to find the truth. This fast paced adventure-thriller will have you on the edge of your seat! I read it in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down!
I picked this book up at the library and did not have high hopes for it. The title is, well, weird! But then again, every e. l. konigsburg book title is weird so I thought I would give it a try. It’s about a girl named Elizabeth who has no friends until she meets Jennifer who just happens to be a witch. She not only befriends Elizabeth, but she allows her to become her witch’s apprentice. It’s an okay book, but not as good as Mixed Up Files or View From Saturday.
Crash is another great Jerry Spinelli book. Usually his books have a really sad component to them, but this one is pretty mild in that regard. Crash is a boy that crashes through life with little regard for anyone or anything. He’s popular and the star of the football team. He takes special delight in torturing a kid in his neighborhood named Penn because he is a Quaker, wears second hand clothes, and is a vegetarian. Things change suddenly in the middle of his 7th grade year, however, and nothing will ever be the same. Great message and great book.
This book was recommended to me by my student, Conner Vandiver. Connor is a book conniseur so he really knows what he’s talking about. This book is hilarious. Super popular Jackson Jones loves to torment the dorks at his school. When he has to get braces and headgear, he learns what it’s like to be a nerd himself. When he starts following the nerds at school for fun, he discovers that they are actually part of a clandestine group called the National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society or NERDS. You’ll have to read to find out what exciting things happen to Nerds.
This is the 4th book in the Gregor the Overlander Series. Gregor is visiting his mother in the Underland. She cannot leave until she is fully recovered from the illness she contracted in The Curse of the Warmbloods. While there, Gregor is drawn into a quest with Luxa to save the nibblers. They find the Marks of Secret near two scenes of death but aren’t sure what to make of it. As they are drawn deeper into the Underland, they face fierce opponents who will stop at nothing to destroy them. The only problem with this book is that it leaves you with a terrible cliffhanger! So get the 5th book at the same time as you get this one so you can just keep on reading.
This book is amazing! It tells how Narnia was born. The professor from the Lion the Witch, and the Wardrobe is really the 1st person in Narnia. Read it after the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
