Usually I absolutely love anything by Spinelli. This book, however, left me a little cold. It’s about a 9 year old boy who’s mother dies. He is not being raised by his grandmother in a new town. He meets a 13 year old girl who can’t stand her fortune teller mother because she’s crazy. They become unlikely best friends. The thing I don’t like about it is, neither one of the main characters is very nice. It really makes it hard to care about either one of them.
This book is AMAZING!!!!! At first glance, you might think a book about a grouchy old man and a stray cat doesn’t sound very interesting, but you’d be wrong, very very wrong! I alternately laughed out loud and sobbed hysterically through the ENTIRE book. I’m not kidding. You should read this book NOW TODAY RIGHT THIS MINUTE!
James Dashner writes some really interesting books with wild premises. (He is the author of the Maze Runner series.) This book tells the story of Michael, an extreme gamer in the future. He and his friends don’t just play games on their televisions or computers though, they enter them through a “coffin” and live the game. When they die, they just wake up back in the real world. But there is something evil lurking in the “VirtNet” (The virtual world that they enter to play the games). Michael is tapped to try to find the one responsible for the evil. He has to survive “the Path” which is fraught with danger and terror. The ending has an amazing twist that you don’t see coming AT ALL! This book would be great for middle and high school boys. If you liked the movie “The Matrix” you will like this book.
