I have been wanting to read this book for a very long time. It did not disappoint. It is an incredible story of two teenagers with cancer. Hazel is terminal. It’s not a matter of if she will die, but when. She has “lungs that suck at being lungs” so she has to use an oxygen tank 24/7. All she wants to do is sleep, take classes at the local community college and read and reread the same book. Her mom makes her go to a cancer support group which she hates, but one night, she meets Augustus Waters there. He has lost a leg from his cancer, but is now cancer-free. They begin a complicated and beautiful relationship. She is afraid to get too close to Augustus because, as she puts it, she is a hand grenade. She knows when she dies she will leave carnage in her wake. This is a really beautiful story.
Flipped is a story told from two points of view. Bryce is a good-looking, but shallow and fairly cowardly boy. Juli is a quirky girl who likes to climb trees and raise chickens. From the day Juli sees Bryce move into the house across the street in 2nd grade, she knows that he’s the one. She falls utterly in love with him. Unfortunately for her, all he wants to do is get away from her. You flip back and forth between perspectives and it’s great to see the same event as viewed by two different people and how utterly opposite it can appear depending on who’s looking. By the end, a lot of perspectives have “flipped”. If you love a good coming of age story, you’ll flip for this book! (Pardon the pun)
Georgie Burkhardt is a 13 year old girl who is a dead aim with Springfield single shot rifle and speaks her mind freely. Unfortunately her free speaking may or may not have gotten her older sister Agatha killed. After they bury a body that Georgie is positive is not her sister’s, she goes on a quest to find the truth. She finds more than she bargained for out in the wilds of Wisconsin. Georgie left with the intention of bringing her sister back, but only one came home.
This is a wonderful, imaginative book about a girl named Miranda living in New York City in the 70’s. Miranda is obsessed with A Wrinkle in Time and reads it over and over again. She encounters her own little mystery involving time travel that will blow you away. It’s beautiful and creative and you will fall in love with the characters.
This story is about Katniss Everdeen. After Katniss volunteers to be a tribute in the Hunger Games, she meets her fellow tribute, Peta Melark. She finds out that Peta is madly in love with her and then it is all about protecting Peta in the Hunger Games. This story is all about life against love. It is an inspiring story and I think that everybody should read the Hunger Games series.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries are gems that never disappoint. This one is no exception. The mystery of the murderous hound that haunts the Baskerville family will keep you riveted. Dr. Watson is sent to the Baskerville estate to investigate the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville as well as to safeguard the only known heir to the estate, Sir Henry Baskerville. Will Watson be able to survive life on the cursed moors and help Holmes solve the mystery? Read the excellent novel and find out!
