This is a great book! Some catastrophe has forced people to live in an underground city for hundreds of years. But things are starting to run out, clothing, food, and most importantly, light. When the light is gone, they will be left in complete and utter darkness. What can they do? No one even realizes that they are underground or that there is anything outside of Ember. But Lina, a 12 year old girl, finds some long lost instructions that will change everything.
This book was recommended to me by my student, Natalie. She told me it was really good and she was right! It’s about 3 children who are sent to live with an uncle in Colorado. They have to fly their alone but something strange happens on the flight. When they get off of the plane at the airport, nothing makes sense and they find themselves on an adventure like no other. The ending will blow you away!
Divergent is a fast-paced novel set in the future in a city where everyone lives in one of five “factions.” The factions each have their own set of values that are most important to them. The main character, Beatrice, has been raised in the “abnegation” faction, which values selflessness above all. At the age of 16, however, she has to choose which faction to spend the rest of her life in. She can choose abnegation and stay with her family, or she can choose “dauntless” and live a life of courage and adventure. It’s a very good book and I can’t wait to read the second installment, “Insurgent”!

This book is a gripping account of the life of Jesus. It focuses on Roman history and Roman culture during the life of Jesus. It chronicles the abject cruelty and depravity that was the Roman Empire. It’s very difficult to read the graphic description of the crucifixion but it is a good reminder of what our Lord endured for us.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a pastor in Germany during World War II. While many churches bowed to the pressure of the Third Reich, Bonhoeffer and the Confessing Church would not. They could not stand by and watch what Hitler was doing to their beloved Germany, to the Christian church, and to the Jewish people. They formed a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler. They were willing to give their lives for this mission. Bonhoeffer was eventually put into prison then transferred to a concentration camp where he was executed for his beliefs. He was a Christian that lived his faith completely and gave everything for God.
What happens when a few dozen children become stranded on an island? Will they band together or will they turn on each other? Will they cooperate to survive or will it become survival of the fittest? You will see a microcosm of humanity on this island and it won’t be pretty.
