It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…..Dickens’ novel about the French Revolution is so beautifully written, so vivid in it’s descriptions, that you become immersed in 18th century Paris as “Madam La Guillotine” is staining the streets red with blood. You are pushed and pulled between sympathy for the starving peasants and horror at what they become after the storming of the Bastille. Totalitarianism by aristocrats is traded for totalitarianism of the mob. And the mob is relentless in its thirst for blood and vengeance. But you will be uplifted by the courage of the unlikely hero, Sydney Carton, who will give it all for the woman he loves.
